Call to Worship - Psalm 24

lead by Brendan Lane

The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,

the world and those who dwell therein,

For he has founded it upon the seas

and established it upon the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

And who shall stand in his holy place?

He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

who does not lift up his soul to what is false

    and does not swear deceitfully.

He will receive blessing from the Lord

and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Such is the generation of those who seek him,

who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates!

And be lifted up, O ancient doors,

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

    The Lord, strong and mighty,

    the Lord, mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O gates!

And lift them up, O ancient doors,

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

    The Lord of hosts,

he is the King of glory!

As we worship this morning, acknowledging Jesus as King, we enter into the paradox of Palm Sunday – that the very crowds who welcomed Jesus with shouts of “Hosanna!” turned on Him with shouts of “crucify!” several days later.

Although we may not have literally joined the shouts of “crucify!”, we do know that it was our sin that Christ bore as He was crucified. Isaiah 53:6 reads, “all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” It was our sin for which Christ was crucified.

Knowing this, I invite you to join in this prayer of confession. Let us acknowledge and honestly confess our sin before God.

O King of Glory,

we confess that our praise of your majesty has often been faint, our performance as citizens of your kingdom treasonous.

For we have surrendered to the enemy by our secret and our known sins.
For our sinful treason you died, Lord Jesus.
For our restoration, you rose again.
Draw us closer to you in this holy week, that our eyes may catch the vision of your tears, and our hearts, the wonder of your grace.
By the Holy Spirit’s continuing discipline, let us be loyal and loving servants of the King.

Praise be to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Brothers and sisters, hear this good news, this Word of the Lord from Psalm 118:

Let those who fear the Lord say,

“His steadfast love endures for ever.”

Out of my distress I called on the Lord;

the Lord answered me and set me free.

The Lord is my strength and my song;

he has become my salvation.

I shall not die, but I shall live,

and recount the deeds of the Lord.

In Christ, God answers us and sets us free!

In Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God.

Note: Offering is a way for Christians to give thanks to God as an act of sacrificial worship. We're thankful for many who have asked how you may continue to give during this time. The church has set up a method for online donation which you are welcome to explore following our time of worship here. Let us pray.

Prayer of Longing for the Lord's Supper

Written by Rev. Abraham Cho

Lord Jesus, our hearts brim with longing today. We long for one another, for the day when we might gather again as your body, around your table of grace. We long for your table, spread out for us in this wilderness, where we feast on the abundance of your house and drink from your river of delights. We long for you, for your presence in the Supper. For your body broken and your blood poured out alone can strengthen our hearts and satisfy our thirst.

But until the day of our joyous reunion, teach us to lament this absence in our lives. Teach us to long for you, for your church, for your kingdom, and for the day of your coming again. For on that day you have promised to lead us up the mountain of God where we will partake with you, a banquet of rich foods prepared for all peoples.

We pray this in the name of him who is the bread of heaven and the cup of salvation.

Revelation 7:9-12

lead by Brendan Lane

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice,

“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever!”
